At your first consultation the acupuncturist will use a number of different diagnostic
methods to get a complete picture of your health and lifestyle, asking questions
about the problem you have come with and also general health questions including
taking a medical history, reading your pulses, and looking at your tongue. They will
when appropriate examine you and may ask you to go through movements to assess how
well the joints and muscles are moving. You may be asked to remove some clothing
so the acupuncturist can treat you, so we recommend you wear underwear or shorts
that you are comfortable in. A BAcC registered acupuncturist will never needle through
clothing.
Patients are often covered with towels both to keep them warm and to provide a level of modesty. If you are uncomfortable at any time, just talk to your acupuncturist.
Based on this information, the acupuncturist makes a diagnosis and puts together
your personal treatment plan. Acupuncture points are selected according to your symptoms.

Your acupuncturist will often give suggestions and advice to help you at home or at work, and may recommend exercises or lifestyle changes to help your recovery.
What does it feel like?
Acupuncture needles are much finer than needles used for injections and blood tests. When the needle is inserted you may feel a tingling sensation or dull ache.
Should my doctor know?
If you have been prescribed medication we recommend you tell your doctor that you are planning to have acupuncture. Do not stop taking your medication. You should always tell your acupuncturist about any medication and supplements you are taking as this may affect your response to the acupuncture treatment. BAcC acupuncturists are trained to recognise potentially serious underlying health conditions and may refer you to your GP if they consider it appropriate.
How many sessions will I need?
Frequency and number of sessions depend on your individual condition. Some change is usually felt within five or six treatments, although occasionally just one or two treatments are sufficient. Some people choose to have regular acupuncture to maintain good health.
Can I bring someone with me?
Yes, I am happy for patients to attend with carers and family members where support is appropriate.
